Tourist Information

Tourist Information about Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital city of the Argentine Republic. Located in the southern cone of the American continent, Buenos Aires has a population of more than 15 million, turning the city into one of the largest urban metropolis in the world. Buenos Aires is surrounded by water: the Río de la Plata (River Plate) to the east and the Riachuelo to the south. The Avenida General Paz (General Paz Avenue) encircles the city from north to west and serves as its land limit with the rest of the territory. The Avenida General Paz is a fast highway that connects the capital city to the vast, surrounding districts knows as Gran Buenos Aires (Greater Buenos Aires). A comprehensive transportation system joins Buenos Aires with the rest of Argentina and with the rest of the world; this system comprises a port that welcomes both large cruises and ferries, two airports, a train and a subway network, modern highways and expressways, and a big bus station located less than one kilometer from downtown.

Weather

The annual average temperature in the area is 18ºC. On very few occasions, visitors can experiment extreme hot or cold weather. Any season is good for walking and sightseeing. July is the coldest month of the year with temperatures ranging from 3ºC to 8ºC. Frost is unusual. For being outdoors, bring a wool coat, jacket, overcoat and a scarf. Buenos Aires has hot, humid weather in Summer; since the average temperature is 28ºC and gets a little cooler at night, you will be fine with something light. The average annual rainfall is 1146 mm, Spring and Fall having the highest average. But rain is mild and often brief and will not stop anyone from following everyday routines. An umbrella or raincoat will suffice to protect you from rainy weather.

Accommodation

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is prepared to accommodate large numbers of visitors. The city houses more than 450 lodging facilities, 25500 rooms and 52000 beds. Since most of the tourist attractions are located in the downtown area —which is also the city's financial and business district— the downtown neighborhood concentrates most of the city's hotel offering. However, Buenos Aires can now offer quality and budget accommodation options in all its neighborhoods. You can count on a varied and extended transportation system to move around and take you back to your hotel.

Transportation

Visitors coming to Buenos Aires from any of the country's provinces will arrive at the Jorge Newbery airport. This local airport is located next to the River Plate on the Costanera Avenue and is very close to the city's financial district. The Jorge Newbery airport is also the departing point for traveling to neighboring countries or for visiting any of Argentina's attractions located in other provinces. However, visitors coming from abroad will arrive at Ezeiza or "Ministro Pistarini" airport from which they can take a shuttle or cab and be in the city in around fifteen minutes. It is easy to move around in Buenos Aires. It has five subway lines that take passengers to almost all city points; the final stop of all the lines is the downtown area. Cabs are also a good option to move around since you can get on any of the 32000 official units at any spot. They will charge a basic rate and any additional expenses as set by the meter.
You can also try any of the 100 bus lines running in the city. Buses are fast and affordable and one of the preferred means of transportation of local people. In addition to covering all the city neighborhoods, many bus lines even cross the city borders to reach many suburban towns and cities in Greater Buenos Aires.
Renting a car is a good option for people that appreciate style, comfort and autonomy.
